About 250,000 students benefit from Toppers, TELS

About 250,000 scholars are currently benefiting from the National Toppers Scheme and the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme.
This was revealed by the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala at the Naleba College annual prizegiving day.
Mr Bala said the Government had set an important objective which was to continuously support education programmes.
“This is to ensure that the children are given the best resources and access to education,” he said.
“Every school child is seen as equally important and Government’s ongoing programmes on bus fare concession, free textbooks and tuition free grants are some of the fiscal measures to support our children,” he said.
He said every Year 13 student securing a spot at a recognised institution were liable for Government’s free education scheme.
“If you have completed Year 13 and have been enrolled in one of the recognised tertiary institutions by Government, you are guaranteed to be liable for the National Toppers Scheme and the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme,” he said.
Mr Bala reminded students that it was important to acknowledge the background against which many have been educated.
“Our parents and forefathers made many sacrifices in order that others in the family can be educated, many of these were made because education was not free,” he said.
He said the Government would be tarsealing the school’s road.
“The government will fix the road of Naleba Secondary School because it is part of Government’s policies that roads in front of all schools need to be upgraded,” he said.
