Letters To The Editor, 25th November 2017

Trade union election
Amenatave Yaconisau, Delainavesi
I thank Edwin Nand of the Fijian Elections Office for his informative article on the new touch screen voting hardware offered by AWEB according to section75(2)(b).
TELS appreciation
Kirti Patel, Lautoka
A work colleague would like to show her appreciation to the Government for the TELS (Tertiary Education Loan Scheme).
Her son has been benefiting from the scheme.
She says no other Government has done so much for our country and its people compared to the present Government.
Thank you A-G
Savenaca Vakaliwaliwa, Suva
Thank you Attorney-General and Minister responsible for Climate Change for clarifying that the planned welcome ceremony for the Fijian COP23 delegation was not the intention of Government, Prime Minister or his ministerial team but was a result of independent planning by a few well-intentioned, but perhaps naive civil servants.
From the perspective of Government supporters who see no good reason for a $35,000 party; your response has given us an assurance that our current Government does listen to the opinions and views of its people.
I hope Government is seriously looking at and will deal with all the areas that have been pointed out where the $35,000 party money should be used.
We are only months away from the 2018 General Election and already the people are voicing areas that are itching and needs scratching.
Scratch it now and another FijiFirst Party landslide victory will follow.
e-Card fines
Amrit Singh, Bau Road
It’s very sad to know that the Land Transport Authority is imposing $50 fine on passengers in buses for not having a receipt or e-ticketing card.
Who made this law of $50 fine?
Were the public consulted on the amount of fine to be charged by LTA?
Since we are a democratic nation, the public needs to consult before making a law on the denomination of fine which LTA can charge.
During busy rainy days you hardly see LTA officers directing traffic on road; it’s the Police who are doing their job.
Since LTA is for land transport why not send your officers to direct traffic Mr Maharaj?
Where are your officers when cars are speeding on Koronivia road and other village highways?
First of all not all can remember to carry e-cards with them sometimes we do forget.
Your officers should only fine those with repeated offences of not keeping an e-Ticketing card.
I hope the minister for transport looks into this matter.
We live in a democratic nation.
Consult with the public next time before making or issuing such a hefty one time fine.
Pacific Cup
Suresh Chand, Nadi
Please allow me to wish all the best to the Fijian teams participating in the Pacific Cup this year.
Rewa, Labasa, Lautoka and Nadi are taking part in the competition which is currently underway in New Zealand.
Unfortunately, the Ba football team decided not to take part this year.
No doubt the tournament in which our domestically excelling soccer giants are taking part in is gaining momentum as the years pass by.
I think the jet setters have been a part of the competition every year since it began and have won more times than others so far.
The Green Machine drew their opening match and won the second in this year’s meet so far.
The results indicate this pool is tough.
On its current track, I believe, the jet setters might again be the winner.
All in all, the participants are testing their skills and learning more and more from one another every time.
I also think the competition as it gets older will attract more participants.
May I wish the organisers all the best, too.
