Government Ministers were thrilled to be part of the COP23 traditional Fijian ceremony of vakasenuqanuqa (iTaukei ceremony performed after the completion of a task) at the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs ground in Suva yesterday.

They dismissed criticisms about Fijian participation at COP23 and the traditional welcome.

The ceremony was held to welcome back the Prime Minister and President of COP23, Voreqe Bainimarama, and to recognise the success of the conference.

Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau said the COP23 summit was very successful although the weather was freezing cold.

“Fiji achieved huge success at the COP23. The Prime Minister will take the leadership to the initiatives that need to be carried out within the next 12 months before the COP24 president takes over in Poland.”

Fiji’s Climate Champion and Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management and Meteorological Services Inia Seruiratu said COP23 was a huge success for everyone especially for Fiji.

“There were a lot of achievements that were gained on sensitive issues like the agriculture sector and loss and damages,” he said.

He said through the Fijian presidency and Talanoa spirit, things progressed beyond everyone’s expectation.

“It was a success, however, the challenge still existed particularly as they prepare for next year,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“The Fijian presidency will remain until December next year when it will be formally handed over to the incoming presidency from the Government of Poland.

Assistant Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment Lorna Eden said for them, it was a great lifetime experience and the event was a huge success.

“It was hard work of the Fijian team. The Prime Minister and the President of COP23 did a great job and led us very well. We have a long year ahead of us and a lot of work to do but we are looking forward to it.”

Permanent Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister Yogesh Karan said Fiji performed very well on the international stage.

“Apart from the COP23, the publicity Fiji got was worth millions of dollars,” he said.
