Over 80 students from primary schools around Viti Levu attended the shooting clinic conducted by Silver Ferns legend, Irene van Dyk at the National Netball Centre, Suva yesterday.

The shooting clinic was part of Netball Fiji’s newly-launched NetGO programme which has been carried out in the schools this week.

“The turnout was absolutely amazing for the shooting clinic today which I feel is very encouraging to see,” van Dyk said.

“I think these girls are very enthusiastic with their shooting skills and it’s good to see them enjoy it. Also, this shooting session will give the girls ideas on how they can train in their individual schools.

“However, after conducting the outdoor clinic session I feel the girls are keen about learning new skills but they also need to practice and maintain them during training sessions.

“For today, I will conduct the coaching session and tomorrow I will continue with the ambassador duties.  That will involve a trial and the Oceania coaching programme, which both include training on raising the awareness of healthy lifestyles which is a key factor in the Pacific Sporting partnership and has been endorsed by the Ministry of Health.”

more clinic sessions.

Meanwhile, Van Dyk will conduct a special ‘Train the Teachers’ coaching session with teachers of various primary schools on November 27-28.

 

BACKGROUND

Van Dyk is a South African-born New Zealand netball player. A goal-shoot, she is one of the world’s best-known netballers and the most capped international player of all time.

Debuting in 1994, she represented South Africa 72 times and captained the team. In 2000, she moved to Wellington, New Zealand and was quickly picked for the Silver Ferns
