Clinching the dux of the Marist Convent School in Levuka has propelled Katarina Mateiwai to be a role model for her younger siblings.

Being the eldest of seven, Katarina credited prayers and support from her family for the achievement.

“To me this is a dream come true, when hard work pays off, and of course the prayers from my family helped me to get through all this,” Katarina said after the prizegiving on Thursday.

Katarina dedicated her achievement to her grandmother Luisa Prasad who had been a pillar of strength throughout her academic life.

She is from Vatulele, Nadroga. Her parents work in Nadi.

“Not forgetting my maternal grandmother Mrs Violet Ponting and grandfather Mr Ralph Ponting who live in Australia, for their support,” she said.

“I also want to dedicate this prestigious award to my paternal grandparents who both left us a year ago – Tai Alumita and Tai Taniela (Snr).”

Katarina thanked all the Marist Convent ex-scholars in Fiji and abroad for their support for the 125th anniversary celebration at the school last week.

She took the Best Subject prize for Healthy Living and the First Place prize in her class.
