The High Court in Suva, on January 22 next year, will set a date to hear an application to strike out the abuse of office case against Fiji National University’s former vice chancellor Ganesh Chand.

Chand is charged with one count of abuse of office.

His trial date had earlier been set from July 16-27, 2018.

It is alleged that while being employed in the public service as the FNU vice chancellor, he abused the authority of his office by approving the payments of overseas medical treatment for the then Minister of Education and FNU council chairman, Filipe Bole, without the approval of the council.

Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption lawyer Rashmi Aslam confirmed receiving the notice and affidavit from Chand’s lawyer, Mr Devanesh Sharma.

He then sought the leave of the court to file affidavits in response and requested for a date in January to do the same.

Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza gave Mr Aslam time until January 15 to file and serve his response to the motion.

Mr Sharma stated that his affidavit was very subject specific.

Chand’s bail was extended and his case was adjourned to January 22.
