An aerial and sea search in waters off Bukama and Dalomo on the northern part of the Yasawa Group yesterday failed to find the body of a Korean national still missing after a landing barge capsized early on Tuesday morning.

Fijian Navy Operations Officer, Lieutenant Commander Timoci Natuva confirmed this yesterday afternoon.

Lt Commander Natuva also confirmed there was no immediate chance of a dive team reaching the sunken barge, Kaiwai, which was lying in about 70 metres of water.

“We sent out a search party on an aircraft and combed the waters around the area but there was no sighting of the third missing person.”

“We also had villagers using their boats searching the area but again no sighting of the missing person.”

He said the aerial search spotted debris from the sunken vessel while some had already washed ashore.

Two people, a Korean national and a Fijian mechanic were confirmed dead after their bodies were recovered close to shore on Tuesday, while nine others were rescued in rough seas off Bukama Village.

The two deceased and the missing Korean are believed to have been asleep in vehicles onboard when the incident took place.
