Young Levuka-based weightlifters Maria Mareta, 16, and Sofia Kinikinilau, 15, have big dreams and hopes of winning medals at the Pacific Mini Games on Vanuatu next week.

“It is a good opportunity for me representing my country and my family,” Kinikinilau said.

The duo said they would not make it this far if it were not the support from their families.

“We hope to win medals for our country,”kinikinilau said.

Both will be competing in the 58kg youth category.

“Both lifters are in contention for qualifying in the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina in October next year,” Weightlifting Fiji section manager Ritesh Ratiram said.

“That is why they are going to the Pacific Mini Games so they can build up for the qualifiers.

He said this enabled them in getting some competition experience given that both would be competing and representing Fiji for the first time in a regional competition.

Team Fiji weightlifters will be among the 18 countries competing for glory in the Pacific Mini Games in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

The opening ceremony is on Sunday.
