There is now an increasing demand for surveyors with only 35 registered officers in Fiji to date.

No new land surveyors were registered in Fiji in the last five years.

This was revealed by the Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources, Faiyaz Koya as he handed out registration certificates to three new land surveyors yesterday at the Ministry of Lands Office in Nasese, Suva.

Mr Koya acknowledged that the Lands Minister had often been criticised on the lack of registered surveyors in the ministry and in the country.

“Five years has lapsed without any surveyors being registered. The Ministry and the nation needs more registered surveyors as there is a shortage of surveyors in the country,” Mr Koya said.

“There are currently 35 registered surveyors in Fiji. To address this issue, as part of the strategy the ministry is taking a determined approach in its effort to have more registered surveyors.”

Mr Koya said the shortage of registered surveyors in Fiji would affect the lives of Fijians.

“The shortage of professional land surveyors has a profound effect as the work that surveyors do touch the lives of every Fijian directly or indirectly,” he said.

“The future demand for surveyors and the implications of technological improvements is high. Land surveying is critical in the world we live in today. A recent survey indicates that 90 per cent are over the age of 55.

“This implies that in the next  10 years there will be fewer surveyors as many of their surveyors have retired or had passed away.”
