The Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Dr Josefa Koroivueta issued a strong statement to parents when it comes to parenting.

“Modern technology is not a substitute for human interaction,” he said.

“Treasure the upbringing and supervision of children at all times.

“This is a priority that should not be pushed aside in the school holidays or whatever the festive event it may be.

“Their rights are explicitly covered in our constitution and also under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children.”

Dr Koroivueta echoed similar comments from chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu given the alarming rate of youths involved in crime, accidents and suicide cases.

“The issue of suicide in children and fatal cases from road accidents are significant areas of concern for such matters are fundamentally preventable.”

Moreover, he said it was sad that children died from suicide incidences.

“They have been denied their rights to their future destiny where they could have expressed their full future potentials as individuals and their contribution to national development,” Dr Koroivueta said.

“Suicide by any means is a social issue and not a medical problem.

“It is when the coping mechanisms have been exhausted or one is unable to face the situation at hand, whatever the case maybe that the unfortunate event happens.”
