Human rights empowers us all including those with disabilities which is why it is important for them to be counted as members of the community and be given full access to life.

This was highlighted by Human Rights Commission Manager Education and Advocacy Lasiasa Rogoyawa.

The International Human Rights Day was celebrated at the Labasa Civic Centre which attracted people from all walks of life.

Mr Rogoyawa said it was important to allow people living with special needs a full participation in everyday life as enjoyment of their human rights.

“It is important to understand that we have people living with special needs amongst us and how we can best address their needs,” Mr Rogoyawa said.

“The understanding of sign language and the patience to listen and understand their opinions and decision making are important,” he said.

He said the country was making progress in removing stigmatisation of people with special needs.

“One thing positive is that Fiji is moving toward inclusiveness,” he added.

Mr Rogoyawa said those with special needs do not have to see their disabilities as their barrier to life.

“It only takes one person to make a stand and to make a difference and to take a firm stand in what one believes in,” he added.
