It was a bad start for Conway Beg our national number one ranked tennis player.

Begg lost his Pacific Mini Games opener to Samoa’s Leon Soonaole at the Korman Stadium, in Port Vila, Vanuatu, yesterday.

Beg took the first set 6-2 but lost out the following consecutive sets 3-6 and 2-6.

“I got to a good start in the first set, but I guess I lost momentum after the break,” he said.

The match was held up during the second set because of the wet weather and from then on it was all Soonaole’s show.

“I’m not blaming it on the rain. Soonaole is a good player with years of experience. He came out and used his experience against my junior mentality, but I enjoyed the match.”

Beg said playing against some of the best tennis players in the Pacific region is a blessing.

“It was good experience for me.”

Team Fiji tennis coach Robert Kraus said Beg did some positive things considering that he had not played in that level for quite some time either than the tournament in Turkmenistan.

“For him to compete at number one is a good sign and eventhough he lost he has done some positive things,” Kraus said.

“Rain delay was part of the game but that is just how it goes but it definitely changed the momentum.”

In the other men’s singles match William O’Connell beat Kristen Cleme of Samoa by two straight sets 6-0 and 6-0.

While in the women’s Viena Kumar went down by two straight sets 3-6 and 3-6 to Vinda Tea of Solomon Islands.

The tennis round robin competition continues today.
