A fire that is still burning at the Lautoka Rubbish Dump in Vunato was lit in six different places.

Lautoka City Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra said the fires seemed to have been deliberately lit on December 1, which is when it was first detected.

“This could have been the work of scavengers who come to the dump to go through the rubbish,” Mr Nakauvadra said.

“The area is big and is a bit difficult to look after.

“The rubbish is thick and it has been difficult to contain the fire.”

Mr Nakauvadra said because of the piles of rubbish, the fire at the bottom was hard to get at.

“We are doing our best to bring it under control.”

Mr Nakauvadra said they had assistance from the National Fire Authority during the past four days.

The smoke from the fire caused concern to traffic travelling along the Kings Highway out of Lautoka yesterday.

A resident of Lovu, Catherine Sahib said they had to close their windows because of the smoke.

“It is a real nuisance when the dump is on fire.”
