Police bid to be on par with technology

The Fiji Police is currently working with the Pacific Community to develop and strengthen its Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing data-statistics capabilities.
In light of this initiative, four Police officers from the Police Strategic Planning, Policy, Research and Development unit recently attended the week-long Pacific Islands Geographical Information System (GIS)/ Remote Sensing (RS) Conference 2017.
The conference which was held at the Japan ICT Theatre at the University of the South Pacific has encouraged the Force to further strengthen its plans to improving the Fiji Police through innovation by embracing technology.
Police Deputy Director of Strategic Planning, Superintendent Mahendra Shyam said the conference benefitted the organisation as they were introduced to a diverse range of issues and developments in the geoscience-geospatial industry.
“The network amongst these industry experts and practitioners is very encouraging. The free sharing of information and leading-edge developments in applications and capabilities, experiences from the field, particularly the insights to the challenges and solutions is highly applauded,” SP Shyam said.
“The geospatial and technical expertise associated with the industry is extremely evolving and law enforcement agencies like the Fiji Police stand to gain tremendously from these developments.”
The Commissioner of Police, Brigadier -General Sitiveni Qiliho adopted ‘Improving Fiji Police through Innovation in Embracing Technology’ as the corporate theme of the Fiji Police Force for the year 2017/2018.
With the theme, Brigadier-General Qiliho has placed a focus on ‘e-centric policing’, cyber-crime investigations, camera and CCTV based policing and strengthening of geospatial-data and statistics based support and other technology based policies.
