A special general meeting for Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) is scheduled to take place on Saturday, where amongst other issues the list of candidates for the 2018 General Elections is expected to be rolled out.

In a move which has surprised many SODELPA followers, it is believed that Member of Parliament Aseri Radrodro is not being given the ticket to contest the 2018 General Elections under the SODELPA banner.

This information has not gone down well with Mr Radrodro’s well-wishers and loyalists from Naitasiri.

It is claimed by well-placed SODELPA sources that while the official word is that Mr Radrodro performed poorly in the interview, the move to drop him is because of past bad blood that exists  between him and SODELPA leader Sitiveni Rabuka.

Mr Radrodro was once married to Mr Rabuka’s daughter and their marriage ended bitterly.

Mr Radrodro’s popularity has been rapidly rising within the party and also among SODELPA supporters and many are of the view that he will make a good party leader.

Several calls were made yesterday to Mr Rabuka to verify the claims, but his phone was switched off.

Calls were made and an email has also been sent to SODELPA general secretary Adi Litia Qionibaravi outlining the allegations. There was no response when this edition went to press.

A number of people from Naitasiri have already made their intention known that dropping Mr Radrodro from the candidate list will not be allowed without a robust opposition. They intend to come out in numbers to support Mr Radrodro.

Mr Radrodro is away in London and could not be reached for comments.

The Naitasiri group are also reminding Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu that they played a big role in electing him as SODELPA President and they are now expecting that he steps in to stop the management board from dropping Mr Radrodro as a candidate.

It is also believed that before Mr Rabuka was brought in as Party leader, Ratu Naiqama had asked Mr Radrodro, on behalf of their Naitasiri followers, whether they agreed on his appointment. Sources from Naitasiri claim that only when they gave the go ahead, Mr Rabuka was brought in as Party leader.

Apart from Mr Radrodro, it is also claimed that MPs Semesa Karavaki, Sela Nanovo and Mikaele Leawere will not return as SODELPA candidates. Party loyalists who worked hard to get the Party registered feel they are being pushed to the margins of the Party and new movers and shakers are calling the shots.

There is now a counter move to use the Special General Meeting to replace Mr Rabuka as Party leader. Attempts will be made to change the management board and remove Mr Rabuka.

The Special General Meeting was scheduled for November 18, but it was deferred. Any further postponement of the meeting will not go down well with Party members who are eager to see who made the candidate list.

Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that former Public Service Commission Permanent Secretary Parmesh Chand was interviewed last week and may have made the list of candidates for SODELPA 2018 list.

Also interviewed was Ratu Tu’uakitau George Cokanauto, brother of former President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and former member of the Fijian Association Party. He also served in the interim administration of Laisenia Qarase.
