Team Fiji beach volleyball teams are a step closer in their quest for gold and a spot in the Commonwealth Games next year.

The Inia Korowale and Qilu Elliot combination defeated Solomon Islands by two straight sets 21-17 and 21-12 at the Kormon Stadium yesterday.

The women also beat Solomon Islands 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 21-17)

“We have to treat every game as a final because it is the qualification round and a win is a must for us,” Korowale said.

He said despite the fact the pressure of wanting to qualify was there, they needed to remain focused in order to get through.

Both the men and women teams are vying for a spot at the Commonwealth Games.

And there is only one spot remaining for both categories.

Only the winner or the gold medalist of the Pacific Mini Games will earn that spot.

Team Fiji beach volleyball coach Todd Edwards was happy with the performances.

“We need to have a strong start against stronger teams. But I am glad our players have got the nervousness and butterflies out of the way,” Edwards said.

“Our players got a very strong grasp of the game and it is really just about small adjustments, fine tuning and positioning. But I’m really confident of where we stand right now.”
