Beach reps on track

  Team Fiji men’s beach volleyball team of Qilu Elliot and Inia Korowale defeated Papua New Guinea  2-1 (21-17, 19-21 15-6 at the Korman Sporting Complex, Port Vila, Vanuatu, yesterday.

Team Fiji men’s beach volleyball team of Qilu Elliot and Inia Korowale defeated Papua New Guinea  2-1 (21-17, 19-21 15-6 at the Korman Sporting Complex, Port Vila, Vanuatu, yesterday.

Coach Todd Edwards said the win puts them in a much better position heading in to the gold medal playoff.

“We are now in a very good position,” Edwards said.

He commended the duo for playing to plan.

“I am very proud of the athletes, they played very well.

“I think we have proved ourselves and we are confident of going right through to the final.”

Fiji is grouped with Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Kiribati. in Pool A, while Vanuatu., Cook Games and Tuvalu are in Pool B. Fiji earlier beat Solomon Islands 2-0.

The women’s team beat Kiribati 21-9 and 21 -8.

Whoever wins gold in the men’s and women’s beach volleyball automatically qualify for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
