Sir Gordon wants  Samoa to lift game as they face Fiji, Canada and Wales

The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team are not going to have their way in today’s pool matches of the Cape Town 7s in South Africa.

This was after Samoan rugby 7s coach Sir Gordon Tietjens called on his players to lift their game if they are to continue with their progress.

The veteran coach warned the task won’t be any easier when they meet Canada, Wales and Fiji.

“This pool, I believe, in some ways as hard as the last pool was because all these teams will be better for their second tournament together, there is no question there,” Sir Gordon said.

“Whilst we got out of the blocks well and hopefully that’s how we start in our first game against Canada and we can continue on from where we left off and that’s just improving and keep trying to get better.”

Sir Gordon said physically the players are in great shape but they will need to bring their mental ‘A’ game.

Meanwhile, Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber has been working on their defence knowing that this is an area the Samoans would exploit. Another concern for the Welshman is the increasing number of yellow cards. They copped three yellow cards in Dubai last weekend.

The Fijians take on Wales at 9.37pm tonight before they face Canada at 12.58am Sunday before taking on Samoa at 4.19am.

Baber has ruled out Waisea Nacuqu due to a leg injury while veteran forward Apisai Domolailai has recovered in time for the tournament.
