Team Fiji men’s football coach Christophe Gamel said the 1-1 draw against Vanuatu yesterday could cost them the gold medal.

Gamel was disappointed after Vanuatu’s Azariah Soromon scored the equaliser in the second half.

“We needed a victory. But it has been a long time since we conceded a goal like that. It was a stupid and silly mistake committed by a senior player,” Gamel said.

Fiji scored first through to Christopher Wasasala but had their hard work come undone due to casual play.

“It may cost us the gold medal, only time will tell.”

On the flip side, he commended how the players were organised defensively.

“We missed two or three scoring opportunities but we need to focus next on Tonga.” The Fijians have yet to play Tonga and New Caledonia.

OTHER MEN’S RESULTS

Tonga 2-4 New Caledonia, Solomon

Islands 6-0 Tuvalu
