The Japan national Under-21 are the team to beat at the 2017 Oceania Challenge Cup tournament.

The Fiji Hockey Federation vice –president Marcus Hicks made the comment after the first day of competition at the National Hockey Center in Suva yesterday.

Japan U21 beat the New Zealand’s President XI 3-0.

“Definitely they will be the team to beat,”Hicks said.

“A very strong performance, they lifted the competition to another level as they were well prepared.”

In the other games, Fijian President XI beat Fijian Invitational (U18) 6-0  while Australia Country beat Fijian President XI 4-1.

This annual event has grown out of the Oceania Pacific Cup which was held for the first time in 2008 and developed as an additional competition when hockey competition being held annually involved only Pacific Island teams.

The series involved annual competition between men and women’s teams representing Australian Country, NZ President’s XI and Fijian President’s XI teams and has been held since its inception in Suva in December,

This year’s competition includes for the first time teams from outside the Oceania region.

Hicks said the Japan U21 and U18 women’s team enjoyed the atmosphere yesterday,
