Husna Umarao Gulnar Akbar was named the Best Outstanding Student of Fatima Girls Hostel.

The 19-year-old of Lautoka was surprised to hear her name announced during the school’s graduation ceremony on Saturday. She is the youngest of three siblings.

Husna was in Year 11 student when she dropped out of school to look after her ailing mother.

It it was not easy for her to cope with her studies, she said.

In 2014, she lost both her parents. Then she moved to Fatima Girls Hostel to seek assistance and continue with her studies.

“When my mother fell ill, it was not easy for me to decide to give up my studies, but I had to because my elder sister was in New Zealand and second elder sister was living in Suva,” Akbar said.

“I did not know what to do but then for my mother I had to drop out of school so I could take care of her because she was my first priority.”

She said throughout the years, her only focus was to get good academic results and to have been recognised was the ‘icing on the cake’.

Fatima Girls Hostel occupants do their islamic studies at the Islamic Institute of the South Pacific in Nabua.

The institute assists youths or their parents who cannot afford to pay for their school.
