Veteran sports administrator Patrick Bower is Team Fiji’s chef de mission to next year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Bower revealed that “long term planning” in terms of developing athletes remained to be a critical issue.

“In fact we really need to have long-term planning which means we need to have some sort of plan in bringing up the younger athletes who, then mature and go on to be senior athletes,” Bower said.

“What we need to have in our plan is to get something that is coming in through our systems.”

He then added this would be a necessary step, given that athletes from other countries were implementing such plans as well.

This is mainly due to the high level of competition that is to be expected during the Commonwealth Games.

“With us going to the Commonwealth Games, what must be realised is the level of competition is extremely high. The athletes who are competing have not just started this year to compete for the Commonwealth Games.”

He said other athletes had prepared for several years now and that was something they needed to consider during their preparation for the Commonwealth after the Pacific Mini Games.

“Also there are some other sports that we really need to pull up and see how we can review the whole situation and see what are we doing? Also to see and learn how we can do better.”

Bower confirmed that Team Fiji will be featuring in 12 sports during the during the Commonwealth Games from April 4-15.
