Coincides with energy and maritime transport experts meeting

‘Over 100 experts discussed latest international, regional developments’

The official launch of Maritime Technology Co-operation Centre in the Pacific (MTCC-Pacific) will take place at Novotel Suva Lami Bay tomorrow.

Pacific Community (SPC) Project Information Assistant Atishma Lal said the launch coincides with this week’s meeting of energy and maritime transport experts.

In a statement from SPC, they said MTCC-Pacific is hosted by SPC in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

MTCC-Pacific forms part of the Global MTCCs Network (GMN), a project implemented by IMO and funded by the European Union with the overall objective of climate mitigation in the maritime industry and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport.

She said over 100 delegates and experts began their discussion in Lami yesterday talking on the latest international and regional developments in energy and transport sectors that affect the Pacific region.

Pacific Community’s (SPC) director for Geoscience, Energy and Maritime Division (GEM) Andrew Jones said SPC ensures that the member countries are compiling and integrating the information provided by the experts.

Speakers at the event include the Deputy Director General of the Pacific Community, Dr Audrey Aumua; Head of Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific, Ambassador Julian Wilson; and the Austrian Ambassador to Australia, Dr Bernhard Zimburg.

High-level speakers from the International Maritime Organisation Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme were also present.

This week the meeting will look into the progress and plans from the 2017 Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers’ Meeting Communique’ and the new institutional structure for the Geo-resources and Energy Programme as well as the Oceans and Maritime Programme.
