The event took place at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra where the late Private Edgar Alma Wright was remembered.

Private Wright was born in Nasese and studied in Levuka and Suva.

He served in the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli and in Egypt.

He was 24-years-old when he was killed in battle trying to help his brother and his mates.

Fiji’s High Commissioner to Australia, Yogesh Punja, was joined at the ceremony by former Australian High Commissioner to Fiji Margaret Twomey, to pay their respects to Private Wright.

It is understood the Last Post Ceremonies are held to share the story behind one of the names on the Australian War Memorial’s Roll of Honour.

According to the Fiji High Commission in Australia; Private Wright’s story is just one example of Fiji and Australia’s deep historical links. Australian and Fijian personnel continue to work together on peacekeeping, humanitarian response and maritime security.
