Former Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy has taken on the challenge of his role as the Minister for Waterways, a portfolio assigned to him by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

Mr Reddy was sworn in as the newly appointed minister before the President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote at Borron House yesterday.

He was accompanied by his wife and family members. Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa was also present.

Mr Reddy was later accorded a traditional welcome by  Ministry for Waterways staff at Bali Towers in Toorak.

“I feel excited for being given a chance and opportunity to work closely with everybody in an area that is important to the Fijian community,” Mr Reddy said.

“This is an opportunity to look into issues facing the rural areas that have been affected with concerns relating to waterways.

“I look forward to working closely with each one of you, to learn from each other, work jointly, undertake research together or use researchers to further boost capacity and deal with issues relating to waterways.”

He said in a few weeks’ time the ministry would look into outlining its programme, look into its legislations, plans and policies.
