The University of Fiji chancellor Ratu Epeli Nailatikau says Fiji’s presidency of COP23 has received international accolades.

And this was through the hard work of Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

“The effects of climate change are a reality for vulnerable island nations and Fiji is no exception,” Ratu Epeli said.

“Fiji’s presidency of COP23 is a significant national milestone.

“It has put Fiji on the global stage and has allowed us Fijians to echo our concerns internationally across nations.

“I am happy to note here that Fiji’s presidency of COP23 has received international accolades and on behalf of the university, I express our collective appreciation to the Prime Minister Honourable Frank Bainimarama for his confident, sincere and sure leadership and unstinting toil for Fiji.”

Ratu Epeli said the university had run several public lectures on climate change through its School of Science and Technology as awareness creation and a build up programme towards Fiji’s presidency of COP23.”

“I strongly believe it was a very positive and a befitting gesture on the part of the university and thank the Vice Chancellor Prem Misir and his team for this innovative public engagement,” he said.

“The effects of climate change remained an existential threat for Pacific Island nations including Fiji.”

He added that Fiji’s Presidency of COP 23 and UniFiji’s public lectures were sign posts for creating greater public awareness and building resilience towards the effects of climate change.
