Team Fiji boxing manager Manueli Koroi Tuinakelo is seeking clarification after one of the boxers have been scheduled to fight twice a day in the competition draws.

“After checking the full draws of the competition we found out that one of our fighters have to fight twice in a day. This is something against AIBA rules,” Tuinakelo said.

This would mean that one of their 81kg category gold medal prospect Pina Ruata would be fighting twice in a day.

The AIBA Rule 5.7 states that, “The supervisor must ensure, where applicable, that no boxer will box twice in the competition. In special situations, the supervisor has the right to relax this rule.”

According to Tuinakelo they found out about the draws yesterday and raised the issue with Team Fiji Chef de Mission Wayne O’Connor who informed him of their support on the matter.

He said they had been informed earlier that they would be no changes made to the official draws.

“We have our ways of addressing it with our Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) and they have agreed with us.

“But if there are no changes then we will go through it, we are not scared but after we are awarded the gold medal we will write a very good report about it when we get home,” he said.

Pacific Mini Games Boxing tournament director Vincent Kalpalu said he would be looking in to the matter and would be addressing it accordingly.
