“We expect them to begin work any time now as the grading in the levelling of the site is complete,” said Lautoka City Council chief executive Jone Nakauvadra

The construction of Lautoka’s new aquatic centre will begin soon following the completion of the ground work by the Lautoka City Council.

Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra said the construction work plans were with the consultant and contractors.

“We expect them to begin work any time now as the grading in the levelling of the site is complete,” he said.

Mr Nakauvadra said he expected the centre to be constructed in the time frame that had been set.

Minister for Local Government Housing and Environment Parveen Bala, while officiating at the ground breaking ceremony on May 4 this year said the project was estimated to cost around $7.3 million and would take approximately 12 months to be completed.

The Aquatic Centre would house an Olympic standard 50 metres x 10 lanes competition pool, 25 metres x 8 lanes warm up pool and a children’s pool for toddlers with relevant facilities.

The second phase of the project would see the construction of a modern pavilion which would allow the hosting of international swimming competitions.

The Lautoka City Council was working closely with Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) or the International Swimming Federation to comply with all their requirements to make the new Aquatic Centre the best local aquatic centre.
