Getting a Dean’s Honours Award does not come easy. Winning two is even more difficult.

So when Radishma Kumar was told she had done just that, it came as a complete surprise to her.

She had dreamt of being a doctor ever since primary school and hopes to contribute positively to the health system in Fiji.

“I always wanted to help patients and I’ve also helped my dad realise his dream of having a doctor in the family,” she said.

Her parents accompanied her during the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences graduation.

The awards included the Dean’s Honours in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and Specials Awards in Anesthesia.

“What I would like to change is communication in medicine because if we can communicate with our patients well then maybe there won’t be as many complaints,” she said.

Originally from Nausori and a former student of Saraswati High School, Ms Kumar is used to reaping the rewards of hard work.

She studied as a private student in her first year and earned a scholarship in her second year after a series of good grades.

“I am interested in surgery so after my internships and periphery attachments, I would like to come back and do surgery,” she added.
