The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has commended the Fijian Presidency for the landmark decision on agriculture achieved at COP23.

The decision, the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture, was concluded after six years of negotiations.

The agreement will help nations reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture, the sector with the second largest emissions, and boost the agriculture sector’s overall resilience to the effects of climate change.

The FAO Deputy Director General of Climate and Natural Resources, Ms. Maria Helena Semedo, recognised Fiji’s leadership in reaching the decision while highlighting the challenges faced by Small Island States during the FAO Council Meeting in Rome.

The decision invites Parties and Observers to submit their views on practical action and recommendations by March 31, 2018 ahead of the 48th Session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies in May in Bonn and is due for reporting back in COP26 in 2020.

Director Semedo said that, with this momentous decision, we now have a great opportunity for making our food supply and farmers livelihood more resilient while also contributing to mitigating climate change.
