Ratu Sekaia Ratumudu Lutunasobasoba Niumataiwalu had set a target to become a doctor at a time when most high school students were still asking themselves ‘what do I want to be when I grow up?’

The Nayau, Lau, lad described by his mother as a self-motivated person, knew that he would somehow find a way.

Yesterday his six-year challenges coupled with sleepless nights came to an end. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery during the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences graduation.

He was one of the 608 students who graduated at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

“When I started six years ago I never dreamt that I will come this far,” Mr Niumataiwalu said.

“I had a hard journey with lots of sleepless nights and long hours in hospital during my practical and studying and it has been a good experience overall.

“When I entered FNU our tutors told us that we have four hours of studying every day and that’s apart from the normal school hours.

“Being a doctor was my dream when I took science subjects in high school and my parents always supported me in the career path I had chosen.

“I know that being in this profession is a huge responsibility because I’m going to deal with the lives of the patients, and it’s a responsibility that I will not take lightly.”

He was fortunate to have been awarded a scholarship from the Fijian Affairs Board (FAB) scholarship  when he first started.

“I take this time to thank God and also I am thankful for the continuous support from my beloved family, and not forgetting my fellow colleagues who pulled me through to this memorable day.”
