A father of six says that parents are the key drivers to unlocking the door to their children’s potential and this will reflect in the choices they make in life.

Mesulame Ratumaiyale made this comment after watching his daughter, Alisi, accepting her awards and her Bachelor of Physiotherapy. She was among 608 who graduated on Tuesday from the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

Mr Ratumaiyale said they were not shocked with their daughter’s achievement because they had faith in her.

“As parents we need to be good at imparting good values, family comes first and everything else is second,” the 64-year-old said.

“We need to sacrifice for our children’s future.”

Mr Ratumaiyale said they would support their daughter in any career of her choice.

“As long I still have the breath, I will do whatever I can to support my children’s education.”

Ms Ratumaiyale said: “I had wanted to do medicine, and I thank God for opening this door to do this wonderful programme.

“The challenges that I went through, I saw it as a way of God showing His grace and enabling me to reach this far.”

The Naivilaca in Rewa girl thanked her family for their never-ending support.

“My family has been with me from day one. They drop me at the library and also pick me up late at night.

“I thank the academic staff and all the workplaces I was given an opportunity to undergo work experience.

“The awards I received today are dedicated to everyone that has been with me from day one.

She hopes to further her studies in her field.

Ms Ratumaiyale is a recipient of the National Toppers Scheme.
