Team Fiji athletics 1500metres rep Petero Veitaqomaki’s will to win earned him the gold medal yesterday.

“I had already made up my mind at the start of the race that I wanted to win gold for Fiji, nothing less so I was not going to let anyone else win it,” Veitaqomaki said.

The Lavena, Taveuni native trailed Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) runner but ran him down in the final straight.

“Coming in to the final straight I saw him in front of me and I just gave it my all, every ounce of breath and energy I put it all in that race.

“I just want to thank God for helping me get this far, my parents Kalara Mere and Petero Sanele for their support and my coach Nemani Tukunia.”

The Sigatoka Methodist Year 11 student was brought initially brought in to compete in the 800m event but Team Fiji athletics assistant coach Joseph Rodan Jnr advised him to run the 1500m.

“I am glad I took his advice and I never looked back from there,” he said.

He was also part of the silver medal winning 4x400m relay team.
