To curb the issue of stray animals in the Northern division, the Ministry of Agriculture will be building temporary pounds at Seaqaqa and Wainigata.

The intended week-long stray animal campaign was put on hold for this purpose, confirmed the Assistant Minister for Agriculture Viam Pillay.

He said once they were built then the campaign can continue.

The Ministry was allocated a budget of $137,000 to tend to the growing issue of stray animals especially in urban areas.

“The campaign was supposed to be conducted on December 5 to 10 beginning in the districts of Nabouwalu, Bua, Korokadi, Dreketi and Seaqaqa in the provinces of Bua and Macuata,” Mr Pillay said.

“The Ministry is setting up pounds at these two areas as we have received a lot of complaints from the general public, until when the pounds are built then the campaign will commence.

“Currently we have one for the Northern Division which is in Bua.”

For farmers whose animals go missing, Mr Pillay said they would need to contact the nearest Animal Health and Production Office of the Ministry of Agriculture to make applications.

“Farmers and livestock owners need to firmly secure their animals at all times,” he said.

“They need to register their animals and mark their animals because when it goes missing and a complaint is made to the Police, it will be easier for them to locate where their animal is.”
