Team Fiji’s deputy Chef De Mission Pauline Stevens says Aaron Powell is the new Pacific sprint champion replacing Banuve `Tabakaucoro.

“As far as Team Fiji is concerned, he is the our new sprint king of the Pacific,”

Stevens said.

“He has been an athlete who has always lived in Tabakaucoro’s shadow. He proved himself when he won the 100m finals but due to some human error, he was denied the gold medal.”

She said however Powell proved himself in the 4x100m helping Fiji win gold.

Stevens maintained Powell’s disqualification in the 100m final was not his fault.

“That technical fault was due to human error and was through no fault of his.”

Team Fiji assistant athletics coach Joseph Rodan Jnr agrees.

Team Fiji lodged their appeal to the Pacific Mini Games tribunal and are currently awaiting the ruling.
