The Police Commissioner handed over 14 new vehicles to his divisional commanders yesterday.

When handing over 14 new vehicles to his divisional commanders yesterday the Police Commissioner Brigadier Sitiveni Qiliho reminded his officers on the importance of road safety.

Divisional commanders from all centres in Fiji were present to receive  vehicles that included one minibus, four twin cabs and nine cars supplied by Asco Motors and Kia Motors.

“I was really disappointed last week that one of our Hyundai vans went off the road,” Brigadier-General Qiliho told officers.

“I understand that accidents do happen, but when it’s through negligence it is totally unacceptable.

“There are more vehicles and new drivers on the road so we need to be more careful in the way we use these vehicles.”

The Police Commissioner was referring to a case early this month when a Police vehicle landed in a drain after an officer from the Eastern Division lost control when driving

The vehicles will aid police mobility, he said, as the force ramps up efforts to curb crime.

“One of the things I set out to do when I came to the Police force was to increase our footprint, our accessibility and our service delivery,” he added.

“The onus is on us to live up to the expectations of Government and to look after these vehicles.”
