Roads Authority Postpones Upgrade Work On 22 Roads

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has postponed upgrade works on 22 roads in Suva because of the construction of major access roads in Suva and on the Kings Highway.

Labelling the road works at Nabua roundabout, Grantham Road, Gaji Road and Princes Road as “not properly planned by the previous authority”, the FRA chief executive officer Jonathan Moore said works on these areas had to be completed somehow.

“The people who planned it that way are no longer here, so this is why we decided to put on hold some projects which should have been ongoing right now,” Mr Moore said.

Work on the 22 roads is part of the Suva Arterial Road Upgrading Project 2 (SARUP 2), which was supposed to start this time of the year.

“Because if we are working on Kings Road, Princes Road or Vatuwaqa Bridge and on Stinson Parade Bridge and then we start doing 22 roads in Suva, we will never be able to move in the city,” Mr Moore explained.

The FRA under his guidance is working with logistics and proper planning.

“Logistical plans on the roads aren’t just about what roads you are going to work on it’s about when you do the road and where you put the people and traffic,” he said.

“It’s happening like this now because it was planned two years ago and the planning lacked foresight.”

Of these 22 roads the FRA has selected to begin work on – Cakobau Road, Denison Road and Queen Elizabeth Drive because of their poor conditions.
