Hard work pays off for Team Fiji’s Shawntel Lockington after winning gold in the women’s High Jump yesterday.

The Xavier College student and 2017 Coca –Cola Games gold medallist recorded 1.70metres despite the wet surface at the Korman Sporting Complex, Port Vila, Vanuatu.

“This win really means a lot to me, it is very special, my hard work has really paid off,” Lockington said.

“Firstly I just want to thank God, my parents Bradley and Elenoa Lockington for their support  throughout.”

She said the toughest part of their preparation was the diet.

“I have not tasted any cake in months and right now the first thing on my mind is to eat some cake.”

Lockington also thanked her coach Ben Qumi and Joseph Rodan Snr and Rodan Jnr and their respective families for their help and support.

“They were really supporting us in and opening up their homes for us athletes from the West to come and stay with them all throughout our build up for the Games.

“I really appreciate it and this win is especially dedicated to them too.”

Other winners in the field events are Mustafa Fall winning silver in Shot Put recording 15.30metres and Eugene Vollmer winning silver long jump.
