The skills level of the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s players during the opening leg of the 2017/18 World Sevens Series has been highly praised by a former 7s coach.

Speaking to SUNsports, Peni Veidereyaki said the new players have played well in Dubai and Cape Town.

“They’ve good skills, which needs to be fine-tuned and we should be fine,” he said.

“There are players in the team who’ve switched from fifteens rugby to sevens and have done well.

“The players have showed their class and we should have a good side next year, especially with the Commonwealth Games and Sevens Rugby World Cup to be played.”

Veidreyaki also praised the team management led by head coach Gareth Baber for building-up a good side.

“The players have been able to play up to that level because of the level of coaching given to them and I commend everyone involved. We will definitely have a good side next year and this side has what it takes to win the series as well as the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup.”

Veidreyaki coached the national sevens team to the first World Sevens Series (1999/2000) where they narrowly missed out to New Zealand for the top spot.

However, the highlight of the Series was winning the first Wellington 7s against a star studded New Zealand side led by the late Jonah Lomu, Christian Cullen, Eric Rush and Karl Te Nana.

During his term, Veidreyaki coached and exposed top rugby stars like Viliame Satala, Vilimone Delasau, Fero Lasagavibau, Setareki Tawake and the list goes on.
