Opportunities for cooperation in developing the local agriculture sector was highlighted by a visiting delegation from the Department of Agriculture of Guangdong Province to the Ministry of Agriculture.

This was raised during a courtesy visit made by the delegation from the Department of Agriculture of Guangdong Province to the Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Viam Pillay at the Ministry of Agriculture headquarters earlier this week.

Mr Pillay along with the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture Jitendra Singh were introduced to the development of modern agriculture currently being implemented in the Guangdong Province by the visiting delegation with the intentions to also adopt it for the local sector.

Discussions also centered on Guangdong’s accumulated rich agricultural production technique and experience as it could help assist developing countries meet their own supply and demand chains.

It was also highlighted that during a visit made to Fiji last year by agriculture experts from Guangdong Province, that edible mushrooms, banana and potato were preliminary chosen as objects of this year’s technology exchange and cooperation project.

Training opportunities for Ministry officials engaged in the work of cultivating edible mushrooms, banana and sweet potato was offered as well.

Mr. Singh acknowledged the visiting delegations proposals as it would help improve service delivery to farmers saying, “we will work closely with the Department of Agriculture Guangdong Province. There will be more training opportunities for staff as our farmers will be the main focus when these trainings and opportunities are pursued.”
