Kava Farmer Gets 14 Years for Rape And Obtaining Financial Advantage By Fraud

A Taveuni man has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment after the High Court in Labasa found him guilty of one count of rape and one count of obtaining financial advantage by deception.

The judge, Justice Salesi Temo said the offender, a kava farmer, took advantage of the victim who was his customer.

“You must not complain when your liberty is taken away to pay for your crimes,” Justice Temo told the man.

“You owned a grog business and took advantage of the victim as she was your customer.

“By commiting the crime, you showed no regards to her human rights and dignity. You also have breached the crime between you and the customer.”

The court heard that the victim was raped on December 30, 2015.

“You raped her five minutes inside the bush and then threatened to kill her,” Justice Temo said.

In his judgment Justice Temo sentenced the farmer to 14 years imprisonment. He was given a non-parole period for 13 years.
