Ninety-three-year-old Lalu Gopi Chand has been recognised as the oldest male ratepayer for Lami Town.

Mr Chand, who witnessed the Lami Town Council’s 40th Anniversary celebrations at Tikaram Park yesterday, was acknowledged during the event and given the opportunity to mark his 93rd birthday.

His daughter, Daya Wati, 42, said her dad worked for the municipal council during his time doing various jobs such as running errands and assisting the special administrator.

“He still looks fit and is healthy. He was committed to doing his work as a good citizen and has been living in Lami for a long time,” she said.

Mr Chand’s wife passed away in 2008. They had seven children, 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

“He is a Hindu, was hardworking, looked after us really well and a good father who always gave sound advice,” Ms Wati said.

“We pray for nothing more, but for his long life and for him to be happy. He has always been a happy person.”

Officiating at the event, the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala said marking the council’s 40th anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on what the council and its citizens achieved over the years.

“It is also a chance for the council and communities to get together and discuss what they wish for the town in the years ahead,” Mr Bala said.

He said this would promote awareness about the town’s history and encourage Fijians to be civic minded in contributing towards future developments.

Mr Kumar said, according to the council’s records, the longest serving councilor and Mayor for Lami Town has been special administrator Jasper Singh and the longest serving employee has been Saiyad Kutty who has worked for 34 years.
