Lifeline Fiji is calling on all leaders to take a stand in the fight against suicide and raise awareness on mental health.

This was after the non-government organisation launched its campaign “NATIONAL LEADERS STANDING UP FOR MENTAL HEALTH” on Saturday at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Lifeline Fiji programme director and WOD candidate for Vodafone ATH Foundation, Jeremaia Merekula, said suicide was on the rise.

“The latest suicide case was by a seven-year-old. We are calling on leaders of our nation to get involved and raise awareness wherever they are,” Mr Merekula said. “We are trying to eradicate suicide and when people see leaders getting involve they will follow.”

He urged people to talk about their problem.

“There are 200 completed cases of suicide from 2016 to date,” Mr Merekula said.

“Everyone, who goes through challenges, must not bottle things up. Reach out for help. There are services available in Fiji that can assist.”
