Powell: I didn’t make a false start

“I know I didn’t make a false start. I know what I did.” a determined Aaron Powell said on his arrival at Nadi International Airport with the rest of the Team Fiji contingent from the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu.
The former Gospel High School sprinter was disqualified for allegedly breaking before the race started.
Powell made it over the line first but was robbed of the gold medal after a decision was made by the ruling committee, which Athletics Fiji president Joe Rodan Snr labeled as ‘daylight robbery’.
Rodan Snr said Vanuatu shouldn’t be hosting the event if they don’t have the appropriate equipment. Games director Barry Mullins has been reported as saying they weren’t able to re-call the athletes because of lack of equipment.
Powell told SUNsports that the Games is now behind him and he’s going to concentrate on his preparation for next year’s Commonwealth Games.
“It was disappointing because I had worked so hard but it’s behind me and I will dedicate my time now for the Commonwealth Games.”
Athletics Fiji chief development officer Joseph Rodan Jnr said Powell was treated unfairly but this would not dampen the spirit ofAthletics Fiji as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games.
“The gun went off first then Aaron moved. Their decision was definitely not fair and wrong.
“We’re awaiting the decision to be made on our appeal but despite that, Aaron will continue to train with the extended squad in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.”
