Magistrate Warns Police Officer In Court

A Police officer was warned by a Suva Magistrate yesterday to appear in her court on time.
Magistrate Deepika Prakash issued a bench warrant against
Usaia Cakau after he failed to appear when his case was called.
However, the bench warrant was cancelled when Cakau appeared some minutes later represented by Suva lawyer Devanesh Sharma who stood in for defence lawyer Nancy Choo.
Magistrate Prakash questioned the accused why he did not appear in court last month when his case was called.
Cakau told Magistrate Prakash that he had gone to court at around 9:45am however he did not get any clarification about his case.
Magistrate Prakash warned the accused not to repeat his late appearance in court and expressed her disappointment that the accused was a police officer who was entrusted with a duty to keep the law.
She told Cakau that she did not like accused persons who mislead the court and further reminded him to appear in court on time for his case.
The case was adjourned to February 13 for mention to fix a hearing date.
Cakau is charged with one count of careless driving.
