The Northern Division has gone through more rural development projects when compared with the other three divisions.

Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said this was highlighted by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Permanent Secretary Filipe Alifereti during a meeting in Nausori earlier this week.

“When we talk about rural development, we talk about water, electrification, roads and shipping services,” Mr Vocea said.

“It was announced by Mr Alifereti that the Northern Division topped the other three divisions in as far as developments in rural areas was concerned.

“We cannot take the credit because it was not our individual effort, but we managed to do it with the able support from our stakeholders,” Mr Vocea said.

Mr Vocea said the biggest challenge in rural development is water.

“There are only three issues that haunt me every time, the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama visits our division and these are water, roads and electricity,” he said.

“Water is top of the list because people can go without electricity and roads to survive, but not without water.

“We have limitations in what we can do on the ground because most projects cannot go ahead without approval from Suva.”

Water Authority of Fiji northern regional manager Apeteniko Radrodrolagi said the authority had secured a piece of land for the proposed Labasa water depot.

“This is to cater for those living in Labasa town and sub-urban areas. The project will start next year,” he said.

“We have received letters from interested companies.

“The authority installed 60,000 litres of standby storage water tanks at Nabouwalu to cater for those living in Nabouwalu and neighbouring communities.”

“This is part of our rural development.”
