The town of Labasa started its countdown to Christmas on Monday night following the lighting of the Friendly North Christmas tree.

The Special Administrator of Labasa and Savusavu Town, Vijay Chand, and Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North president Subash Chandra officiated at the event.

The public gathered at the Mobil Service Station to witness the launch of the Christmas tree lighting.

Mr Chand said the purpose of the Christmas tree was to bring back the spirit of Christmas to the friendly people of the North.

“Christmas is not like before, the main purpose of this Christmas tree is to bring back the hype of the festive season,” he said.

“Let us be jolly, spending Christmas with close relatives and friends.”

He urged the public to be more vigilant during the festive season.

“This festive season be merry, however, do not drink and drive,” he said.

“There have been many accidents on our roads lately. Please no drinking at public places and refrain from drinking at tramlines near you.

“To parents, know your children’s whereabouts and keep an eye on them.”

The Christmas tree will remain lit until January.
