The National Fire Authority board chairperson has raised his concerns on property fires resulting in deaths.

John O’Connor said firefighters had attended to 127 structural fires and 18 lives had been lost by fires this year.

He said NFA was concerned on the high number of property fires and requested Fijians to reduce the fire statistics around the country.

“A life lost cannot be replaced and I urge members of the community to be mindful of fire safety in their homes and workplaces especially as we look forward to celebrate Christmas and the New Year festivities.

“We need to take accountability and responsibility for our own fire safety at home and that of our families as we can’t always assume that a fire will not happen to us because if we do not take fire safety seriously, it will happen to us and the effect to us will be very devastating,” Mr O’Connor said.
