A-G Deplores Temple Attack

Unacceptable and sad is how the desecration of the Votualevu Tirath

Dam mandir was described by the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum when he visited the site yesterday afternoon.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum visited the temple before flying out of the country. He met with officials of the mandir who gave him a rundown of what had transpired over the last few days.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum reiterated the stern warning given by the Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho calling on those carrying out these acts of vandalism to immediately put a stop to it.

“We urge that this type of behaviour be stopped,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“This will not be condoned because every Fijian should have the ability to practise their faith without any hindrance and they should feel free to do so particularly in a place of worship.

“Every right-thinking Fijian should not condone this and so the Police are there now in large numbers to ensure that they carry out investigations properly.

“We wanted to inform the members of the committee that this matter is being looked at very seriously by the Police because Government is concerned that individuals and groups of individuals would do such a thing.”

The temple was broken into on Saturday night and when devotees turned up on Sunday they found the deities painted in red, foul language painted on the walls and rubbish strewn in their prayer area.

Brigadier-General Qiliho is expected to visit the mandir before the weekend to meet with the committee members and the Police in Nadi who are handling the investigations.
