Mohammed Yusuf said Vodafone Fijian football coach Christophe Gamel’s comments regarding the districts’ co-operation in terms of providing proper player background was ‘misunderstood.’

The Fiji Football chief executive clarified after Gamel blamed districts for not providing proper details on players selected for national duties.

Gamel was disappointed with the team’s performance settling for silver at the recent Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu.

“People have misunderstood the coach. I think what he was saying is, that he has got certain strict guidelines in terms of selecting players into the national team,”Yusuf said.

“For instance some of the good players were left out of the national team because they were overweight.”

The Fiji FA will also be looking in to the matter and working closely

With their affiliated districts in ensuring Gamel’s strict criteria were met.

He said Gamel wanted these matters to be addressed at district level and they would be working with him on that.

“He wants the districts to enforce this at their level too so that players become more available for national duties.

“This is what he meant.

“This was the reason why some of their first choice players were not selected for national duties to the Pacific Mini Games.”

Yusuf confirmed that they would be having a council meeting in February discussing the issue with district representatives.
